How much is a trillion dollars?

In the "Business and Economy" department:  Though President Obama's bailout plans have been met with criticism, he feels all the extra spending is necessary for future economic growth.  If fully enacted, Obama's budget is projected to raise the national debt to a staggering 9.3 TRILLION dollars over the next ten years according to the Congressional Budget Office.  That's almost $10,000,000,000,000!  And that's a number few of us can appreciate.  To try to help us wrap our heads around just what an enormous amount of money we're talking about here, I've compiled the following hodge-podge of illustrations.

How much is a trillion dollars? (you really need to check this out!)

And ten trillion?

If you amassed ten trillion dollars in $20 bills, they would fill the take-off cargo capacity (266,000 pounds) of 4,135 Boeing 747's...trouble is, as of February, only 1,412 of these behemoths have ever been built.

Laid out end-to-end and side-to-side, that same pile of twenties could cover every square inch of the entire state of Delaware - with enough left over to buy the fortunes of the world's seven richest people.

If ten trillion dollars were dispersed to the people of the United States, every man, woman and child would receive $32,900.  My family sure could use $164,500!

If the U.S Government ran a surplus of $100,000,000,000 per year and every dime was applied to the national debt, my 9-year-old daughter would be over 100 years old before the debt was paid off.

Do you think the rate of return on your savings account is bad?  If you had $10,000,000,000,000 in an account earning just one half of one percent per year, you could spend $130 million dollars per day and still see your balance grow.

And finally...
At a baby's birth a stopwatch is started...
- At one million seconds, that baby is about 10 days old
- At one billion seconds, that baby is about 31 years old
- If that stopwatch were to reach one trillion seconds, the time from Christ's earthly life until now would have come and gone 15 times over.
- And ten trillion seconds is ten times longer than that.

Are we digging a hole that we can never hope to get out of?  As the treasury begins printing new money by the boatloads - $1.2 trillion just this month - are we now inescapably on the road toward a worthless currency?  It has happened before, many times, in many places.  Here's one account.

During WWI, Germany borrowed heavily expecting that they would win the war and have the losers repay the loans. In addition to these debts, Germany faced huge reparation payments.  Together, these debts exceeded Germany's GDP.  In 1923, when Germany could no longer pay reparations, French and Belgium troops moved in to occupy the Ruhr, Germany's main industrial area.  Without this major source of income, the government took to printing money which resulted in hyperinflation taking hold.  At its most severe, the monthly rate of inflation reached 3.25 billion percent, equivalent to prices doubling every 49 hours.  The U.S. dollar to mark conversion rate peaked at 80 billion.
And led to scene like this...

At the height of the hyperinflation, a loaf of bread could fetch 200 billion marks.  Money was worth more as fuel than the firewood it could purchase.  With any sign of restraint overshadowed by the "government to the rescue" mentality in Washington, this kind of crisis in America grows ever more feasible week by week.

It happened five years ago today
In the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, on March 15, 2004, terrorists ambushed a car occupied by 5 humanitarian aid workers, shredding it with automatic gunfire.  David and Carrie McDonnall, Karen Watson and my parents, Larry and Jean Elliott, had dedicated their lives to the mission of sharing the love of their Savior Jesus Christ with people in need all over this world.  For all but Carrie, that mission ended that day, and Christ welcomed four precious martyrs into his loving arms.

Five years have passed now, and their memory survives in the hearts of the thousands they touched.  Through their example, those who knew them saw not what extraordinary people can do, but what an extraordinary God can do in and through the lives of His children.  It is the work of the Holy Spirit and Him alone that enabled them to shine such a bright light of goodness and love.  In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus exhorts his disciples to "let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."  Indeed, that verse rings so true as I remember my parents' lives.

Larry Thomas Elliott (1943-2004)         Jean Dover Elliott (1945-2004)

Today, we mark the fifth anniversary of their departure from this earth.  While it is true that my family and I have not seen Mom and Dad for five years, I prefer to look at it a bit differently.  We are, in fact, five years closer to seeing them again!

TBC's Steele-o-meter drops a couple points
Michael Steele has long been one of my favorite political figures.  When he was chosen to head the Republican National Committee, I strongly affirmed the decision. However, his recent statements about abortion have caused him to slide a few notches in my book.
"Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?" GQ's Lisa DePaulo asked in the interview in his office.

"Yeah. I mean, again, I think thats an individual choice," he said, according to GQ's transcript, which he did not dispute.

"You do?" he was asked.

"Yeah. Absolutely," he said.

He later tried to clarify his comments with the following written statement.
"I am pro-life, always have been, always will be."

"I tried to present why I am pro-life while recognizing that my mother had a 'choice' before deciding to put me up for adoption," he said, explaining his comments. "But the Republican Party is and will continue to be the party of life.  I support our platform and its call for a Human Life Amendment."

Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to reconcile these two quotes.  This pro-life conservative would like a bit more explanation before putting Steele's GQ comments to bed.

Manmade global warming's opposing view
Here's a story you probably haven't seen in your morning paper or on the evening news.  Seven hundred folks are in New York City to listen to over 70 scientists and other esteemed speakers lay out an opposing view to the idea of manmade global warming.  Among the headliners is Vaclav Klaus, who just happens to be the President of the European Union.  He compares global warming alarmists to another bunch who once roamed Europe.
Klaus, one of the most outspoken critics of manmade global warming in Europe, says those who propagate global-warming hysteria are like the communists of old Europe. Like global-warming alarmists, he stated, the communists did not listen to opposing views.

"They didn't even try to argue back," said Klaus. "They considered you a naive, uninformed and confused person, an eccentric complainer....It is very similar now."

Klaus believes that politicians who propagate global warming hysteria only have one goal in mind: control of the public. "It is evident that the environmentalists don't want to change the climate," he said. "They want to change our behavior...to control and manipulate us."

SCOTUS rules against gerrymandering
The Supreme Court handed down a decision prohibiting the use of the Voting Rights Act to supercede other laws in determining district boundaries.  Previously, that act had been the basis for creating districts with falsely inflated numbers of African-American voters.  Project 21 Chairman Michael Massey lauded the decision as a protection against the abuse of civil rights laws for partisan benefit.
"It continues to confound me that those whose party is responsible for preventing blacks from voting until 1964 now want to illegally redefine voting districts because it serves their best interest," said Massie. "It should go without saying that creating special black voting districts - for partisan gain or otherwise - is against the spirit of civil rights."
An email sent out by Project 21, a black leadership network "dedicated to promoting free-market ideals and the diversity of opinion among black Americans," stated that the ruling is signficant.
This decision is important because it can prevent the political manipulation of voting district boundaries based on race.  In his majority opinion, Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote: "Section 2 [of the Voting Rights Act] does not guarantee minority voters an electoral advantage."
On the surface the decision appears to have the potential of weakening Democratic representation by requiring the redrawing of some predominantly African-American districts.  That most likely will be the case.  However, once new lines have been drawn, GOP representatives and legislators in formerly strong Republican districts may also find themselves more vulnerable as more Democratic voters are numbered among their own constituencies.
