AZ Sen: GOP primary – When Republican Senator Jeff Flake fell behind the likely Democratic challenger in his 2018 re-election bid, it was a bad sign. When he fell behind a Republican challenger as well, it spelled the end of his time on Capitol Hill. He decided earlier this year to forego a perhaps futile quest for another term. In his absence, three Republicans are vying for the nomination in tomorrow’s Arizona Republican primary. Congressman Martha McSally leads Dr. Kelly Wark and Sheriff Joe Arpaio in the polls. She should advance to face Kyrsten Sinema, a shoo-in for the Democratic nod, in November. Election Projection currently projects the Arizona Senate race as a Weak DEM Gain.
FL primary: Tomorrow will also see the nominations for several important races in the Sunshine State. Four House races in Florida are listed on EP’s Competitive House Races List. They are open seats in FL16, FL18 and FL27 and Carlos Curbelo’s FL26. All are Republican-held at the moment. In addition, both the Senate and governor elections are up for grabs in 2018.
The open seat race in CD-27 is currently projected as a Weak DEM Gain while the blockbuster Senate matchup between Governor Rick Scott and incumbent Bill Nelson is currently projected Weak GOP Gain.
